Computer Software
I use a lot of freeware and open source software. In some cases, the freeware is a lite version of a more complete package that is offered in the hopes that you will upgrade. Sometimes I like the package enough that I do that after using the free version for a while.
Below are some packages that I use and would recommend to you. Unless otherwise specified, they are all free for personal use. I will expand the list as I have time and make new discoveries.
Computer Security Software
Firewall
Good firewall software protects your computer from unwanted attacks from other computers and prevents programs on your computer from connecting to other computers without your permission.
On my computer I have been using Comodo firewall (free) on my computer and Sunbelt-Kerio Personal Firewall on the other family computers. You can read more about these and other options at Gizmo’s Best Free Firewalls.
Virus, Trojan, Etc.
For virus protection, I have been using Avira AntiVir Personal Edition since the summer of 2008. Read more at Gizmo’s Best Free Anti-Virus Software. It found some items that Windows Live One Care did not. I discontinued using Live One Care because it seemed to slow down my computer.
